I'm also surprised you are getting warping - PETG is a lot better than PLA on overhangs. PLA has almost no warpage and might work for all of the bed surfaces whereas ABS has very high rates of warpage and might not work for any of our surfaces. It will, as the name suggests, change your life =) When the Z is too close, the filament actually rides up on the line right next to it, creating a really rough surface. When you print the squares in the "life adjust" method, you can take them off, feel them, test them for strength, etc. My solid layers are coming out rough and extruding a bit. I calibrated my e steps and am within 1 mm. I also have "fine tuned" the flow rate using a hollow cube and is within .01 however the solid layers (except for the first layer) look as if I am over extruding or the layers are overlaping to much.
